Origins & Historical Development

1. Early Playing Cards (Mamluk → Europe)

Playing cards entered Europe in the late 14th century via Mamluk Egypt, carrying suits of cups, coins, swords, and polo sticks – the ancestors of modern suits.

2. Medieval & Early Modern Europe

By the 15th–16th century, Europeans were already using playing cards for sortilege (casting lots, making predictions), though systems varied regionally and were transmitted orally.

3. Romani Influence

Romani fortunetellers became strongly associated with card reading in popular imagination, contributing to oral transmission routes, though direct lineage claims remain speculative.

4. Etteilla (1770) – The First Written System

Jean-Baptiste Alliette (“Etteilla”) published the first formal cartomancy manual in 1770, assigning meanings to the 32-card French piquet deck. He coined the term cartonomancie (later cartomancy).

5. 19th–20th Century Codification

P.R.S. Foli (1915–1920) and other authors preserved and expanded Etteilla’s system, creating remarkable consistency across two centuries of cartomancy practice.

The Four Suits

Cartomancy reads suits as symbolic domains:

Numbers
